Chuck Dederick: The Heart of Sturgeon Bay

Chuck Dederick lived in a small town called Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. He was a former high-school all-star football player who’s career was cut short because of a horrific knee injury. However, the community loved Chuck. He was generous with his wealth that he earned through oil drilling and dairy farming. He would regularly sponsor community projects, road construction, and philanthropy events for Sturgeon Bay. He was never married and had no kids but resorted to drinking quite heavily at his favorite local bar: The Curd. For many years he would tell stories about football games, business dealings, his travels around the world, and everybody loved his humor. However, one day his drinking caught up with him and while walking out of the bar on a cold winter’s night, his knee gave out due to his body weight and he slipped on the ice. He laid there for over three hours before anyone called for help. He woke up in the hospital and he knew something needed to change. Chuck realized that if he wanted to remain a pillar of the community, he needed to commit to a new lifestyle and teach others that living the way he did for so many years was unhealthy. So, he made a change. He began working out at the same high school gymnasium he frequented in high school. He cut down on his drinking, fixed his diet, and began running around town. After a few months of rehab and adjusting to this new lifestyle, he returned to the The Curd a changed man. He went on the live another 15 years and passed away at the age of 76 in 2006. Chuck loved his community and was deeply rooted in the story of Sturgeon Bay. However, he needed to make a change in his life in order to continue to help his community out. We at Freebies aspire to be a pillar in all of our communities and hope that we can help those just like Chuck did for so many decades.
